Hard water vs safety
White crust on the kettle, spots on glasses, soap that will not lather — very common in Ontario, and usually not a safety story.

What hardness is
Dissolved minerals — mostly calcium and magnesium — picked up from rock and soil. A lot of Ontario water carries them, which is why scale is so familiar.
Annoying ≠ unsafe
Public safety records focus on health-related checks. Hardness is mostly about taste, soap, and appliances. A city can have hard water and a calm public file at the same time.
What actually helps
- Descaling kettles and fixtures is ordinary maintenance.
- If scale really bothers you, a softener is the usual tool — see our education page (no products sold here).
- If the real issue is taste or smell, that is often different — try chlorine taste.
Scale tells you about minerals, not about a safety score. Hardness complaints will not
usually drive the status on report pages.
