Chlorine taste and smell
The most common taste complaint about city water — and usually the simplest one.

What people notice
A pool- or bleach-like taste, especially after water sat in building pipes overnight. Systems leave a small disinfectant residual on purpose so water stays protected in the street mains.
What records usually show
Not much about taste. Everyday chlorine character is rarely the same as a “result above a standard.”
What you can do
- Fridge jug, loosely covered — the chlorine taste often fades within hours.
- Run the tap briefly before filling a glass.
- If you want a device, carbon is the usual taste filter — comfort, not a compliance need.
- A sudden chemical, fuel-like, or rotten smell is different: call your city.
